Cheap Science
HomePage, Shamash, Quest for Dicyanin, Cheap Science Although I have sufficient money to pursue these Aura studies on the basis of a relatively modest budget, most scientific materials and procedures are very expensive, so it is essential to find ways to make the tests, procedures, and materials as inexpensive as possible. In addition, there is the practical difficulty that as a no-name non-corporation, I have difficulty getting access to materials from large laboratory supply houses. That may eventually be solved with credentialing, but for now, I must beg to get genuine lab articles that cannot be substituted for, such as the organic dyes themselves. So, for many materials, especially chemicals, I must seek commonly available substitutes which are at least 'good enough' to do a preliminary study. For example, denatured alcohol is available in quart to gallon lots from Home Depot. The difference is the purity; the question is will the impurities cause a problem with the organic dyes? My guess is that they will effect the longevity of the dyes, but not the actual color, per se. On the other hand, very cost effective substitutes for many items are available. For example, although I could not get samples of the organic dyes other than from a chemical supply house, which requires a certain level of credentialing, I can go to Staples and buy a small tabletop refrigerator to keep them in (0 - 5 deg F.) There is no need to buy this item from a lab supply house. What do I lose? Possibly highly accurate stability of the temperature, which likely makes no difference for my purposes.
